Education Foundation Awarded $255,724 in Matching Funds

WEST PALM BEACH (October 16, 2015) Since 2001, $34 million dollars has been allocated by the Florida Legislature for the School District Education Foundation Matching Grant Program which has leveraged more than double that in private matching dollars. For school year 2015-16, $4.5 million has been allocated and is being used to fund projects across Florida to help raise student achievement.

Funds can be used in six programmatic areas determined by local education foundation leaders as priorities for advancing student achievement in Florida: Increasing Graduation Rates; Teaching Quality; Literacy; Low-Performing Students; STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Education; and Career/Technical Education.

The Education Foundation of Palm Beach County was awarded 10 grants totaling $255,724 in matching funds.  The grants included:

Academic/Graduation Improvement

AVID – Advancement via Individual Determination  In partnership with Citi Foundation

The first of a three-year program to help Conniston Middle School reach AVID National Demonstration School level, serving as a teaching and observation site to other districts and schools.

Mission Graduation In partnership with Bank of America

Continued funding of five AmeriCorps graduation coaches and resources for five targeted high schools striving to improve their lower than average graduation rates.

Career Education Programs:

Robotics and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education In partnership with Aerojet Rocketdyne Foundation

Continued support for middle school robotics clubs and FIRST Robotics SWAMP (Suncoast) and MARS (Jupiter) teams. New STEM mentoring education program through partnership with Florida Atlantic University, Palm Beach County Council, Education Foundation of Palm Beach County and the School District of Palm Beach County.

Boynton Beach High School/Medical Science Academy In partnership with the Pew Fund

Establishment of a new choice medical career academy at Boynton Beach High School.

Health Immersion/Medical Science Academies In partnership with the Quantum Foundation

Continued support of 34 middle and high school medical career academies.

PBC Collective Impact for Education/Local College Access Network In partnership with education leaders working to advance public education by connecting resources

This proposal is in support of hiring a consultant to lead the group through strategic planning.

Classroom Resources and Supplies

Education Foundation Free Teacher Resource Store In partnership with Ventus Foundation

Piloting to four highest-needs Title 1 schools in spring 2016 to provide necessary classroom supplies.

Teacher Development & Training

Financial Literacy for Classrooms In partnership with the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, the Farris Foundation, the Pew Fund, U. of Wisconsin, Vanguard and Wells Fargo

A three-year program to provide state-mandated teacher training in financial skills for students grades K-12.
