Education Foundation of Palm Beach County wins the Great Charity Challenge
WEST PALM BEACH, FL – On Saturday evening, February 3rd, some of the finest equestrian athletes in the world competed at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. With teams of riders competing on behalf of 29 local charities, the tension was high…but so was the fun. And when the dust in the arena settled, the team from Spy Coast & Preston had recorded the fastest time…a blistering 88.157 seconds! Competing on behalf of the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County, their victory resulted in a grant of $150,000 to support the work of our dedicated teachers and students. But the real winners are the nearly 200,000 students attending schools in the School District of Palm Beach County.
Now in its 9th year, the Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments® has raised millions of dollars for local charities. This year alone, over 300 charities applied to the Challenge. 29 finalists were randomly selected and attended an evening of equestrian show jumping with great enthusiasm and hope.
"If you need your 'faith in humanity restored', this is the place to be!" mentioned Anne Caroline Valtin, Executive Director of the GCC. "Being surrounded by so many passionate and dedicated individuals is extremely inspiring. We are truly grateful to them for their work in the community and to the amazing sponsors for making this event possible."
The Great Charity Challenge was the vision of Mark, Katherine and Paige Bellissimo who combined their love of equestrian sports with their well-known philanthropic spirit. The 2018 Great Charity Challenge was the biggest and most successful yet. Paige Bellissimo commented, "We are very excited to see such a diverse group of nonprofit organizations join us for this ninth edition. It reflects exactly why we do these drawings randomly: so that everyone has a chance to participate. We hope to inspire the community at large to get involved with some of these local nonprofits by promoting volunteerism throughout the season."
Education Foundation President and CEO James S. Gavrilos adds: “Tonight, I am speechless. Thanks to the Bellissimo family, our corporate sponsor, Dever Golf Cars, and Spy Coast & Preston, The Ed Foundation has been given an opportunity to touch and change lives throughout our School District. We will use this grant to support the work of our Red Apple Supplies Store as well as fund grants for innovative teachers throughout Palm Beach County. There is no duty more sacred than the education of our youth…and tonight, we have more resources to reach more children.”
