Academic/Graduation Improvement

Mission Graduation

Now in its sixth year the Education Foundation will again partner with the School District and the Literacy Coalition to provide AmeriCorps volunteers to serve as graduation coaches at five high needs high schools. An average of 75% of the sophomore students attending these five high schools are not reading on grade level and an average of 56% did not pass the End of Course Algebra test. Without immediate and intensive intervention there is little hope of passing these requirements for graduation.

A cohort group of 80-120 at-risk students from each schoool will be identified. Through the assistance and services provided by the coaches barriers to graduation will be identified and resolved through mentoring, tutoring, tracking, guidance and support.

Outcomes will be measured through quantitative data to include the number of seniors graduating and receiving a standard diploma, increase in GPAs, successful course competion and promotion to the next grade level for sophomores and juniors in the cohort groups.

The program's success is evident in its continued increase in graduation rates from 65% to 77% for the participating students over the past five years.

Career & Technical Education

Career and Technical Education helps graduating seniors be workforce ready. Career Education is a planned program of career and technical courses and learning experiences that links educators, businesses and the community in preparing all students with the knowledge and skills for lifelong learning and successful careers in a global society. The School District of Palm Beach County and the Education Foundation aim to ensure that every student is properly prepared for postsecondary enrollment and/or smooth transition into the workforce.

Career and technical education programs cover a wide variety of occupations today like robotics, medical sciences, computer systems technology, culinary arts, and fashion design. Our support of the School District of Palm Beach County career academies helps increase high school graduation rates and cement better career opportunities beyond high school. It also helps those students who would otherwise contemplate dropping out, instead building brighter futures through sound career training.

The Pre-Engineering Robotics programs and the Medical Sciences Academies provide students with factual, rigorous and engaging curriculum for students preparing them for future careers or post-secondary education. Many of these students have not traditionally been exposed to engineering or medical programs or professions. Since 2011, over $448,000 has been raised to support these programs throughout Palm Beach County.
